Greece and Turkey are fascinating countries with a long history and many fascinating traditions. This vacation features the major sites, starting in Athens with its Acropolis and lively Plaka district dotted with cafés and archaeological findings. Discover Meteora with its extraordinary monasteries built atop rock formations; ancient Delphi, sight of the Delphic Oracle; and the archaeological site of Vergina, which includes the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Stop in Kalambaka, Thessalonika, and Alexandroupolis, and visit the site of the Battle of Gallipoli before crossing the Dardanelles between Greece and Turkey. Take time to visit the remains of Homer’s legendary Troy, and drive along the Sea of Marmara to Yalova, famous for its thermal hot springs. Then, ferry across the Bay of Izmit to Istanbul—a vibrant city of mosques, markets, and historic buildings of Byzantium Constantinople fame.
